Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day

at

Middlesex Fells Reservation

Sheepfold Meadow

923 Main St., Stoneham, MA

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Come join NEMBA at a beautiful kid-friendly park just minutes outside of Boston for a day of Mountain Biking, Outdoor Education, Skills and Fun!!!

What: A fun-filled, challenging adventure/skills course winding through beautiful forest. There will be several skills and educational stations along the course to challenge young riders and allow them to earn points toward cool giveaways or shwag! There will be youth and adult ride leaders, or riders can ride by themselves or with their parents or older siblings, completing the course self-guided. The course should take approximately one hour for a novice rider. Also, plenty of other activities going on all day long including tricycle races, and other non-bike events. At 2:30PM there will be a big raffle with great prizes incluuding a new Mountain Bike! (Must be present to win.)

Who: This is primarily geared toward girls and boys aged 6 thru 12. Of course younger/older siblings and parents are also welcome - there will even be activities for the 3 -wheeled set!. We are also looking for volunteers to help with setup, registration, the skills areas, etc. Please contact us for volunteer info.

When: Saturday, October 4th, 2008, from 9:00am to 3:00pm (see Event Schedule below)

Where: (New Location!) Middlesex Fells - Sheepfold Meadow, 923 Main Street, Stoneham, MA, 02180 (Rte. 28) Check out the GoogleMap.Then check in at the registration tent and have fun!

How Much: This event is FREE. There will be an expo area with vendors who will have mountain bike and sporting equipment for sale, as well as other local merchants. There will be food available as well - compliments of Cycleloft and Redbones. NEMBA will be promoting Trail Maintenance and, as always, welcome new member signups.

Why: Because it will be fun! And it's never to early to learn how to ride a mountin bike properly and to care for the environment.

More Info

The goals of the event are to:

  • Introduce youths to mountain biking as a healthy form of recreation.
  • Provide a safe and educational environment for them to learn and experience the outdoors.
  • Teach respect for the parks, trails, and other trail users.
  • Provide a fun event that fosters partnership between non-profit and private organizations and the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

This one-day event is precipitated by the epidemic of childhood obesity in the US and would celebrate getting kids on bikes by providing self-guided and led group rides for various age and skill levels in a safe environment. The event will offer skill, educational and game events, a fun-filled expo area with food and drink, educational booths, bicycle/sporting related vendors with free swag items, a raffle, and a play area for the smaller non-riders. There will be a focus on educating kids and their parents about responsible riding, bike safety, and use of public recreation facilities.

This will be a FREE event for the participants, so please take a few minutes to visit our sponsors that enable this event to take place. They have donated money to defray the costs and all of the prizes - each child will leave with something along with, we hope, wonderful memories of the event.

A word about safety: we have designed this event to be as safe as possible without sanitizing the experience of mountain biking. Mountain biking, as a sport, has inherent dangers that all parents should be aware of. All participants will be required to sign a waiver. In addition, we have built in a safety precaution to the skills game the participants will be playing to be sure that all children who enter the woods are accounted for. All participants must wear numbered wristbands and must check in/out with the shwag/registration tent upon exiting the course. As at all NEMBA events, helmets are mandatory.

Rain policy: If it is fully raining at 8:30am, Check this website for postponement to the Sunday, October 15th, rain date.

THANKS and We'll See YOU out there on Saturday, Oct. 4th!!!!!

This event and the ride seoies is sponsored by the MA Dept. of Conservation and Recreation, GBNEMBA and NEMBA Explorers. In 2007, the MA DCR created a program to provide outside, supervised activity for children: "No Child Left Inside" to give children an opportunity to get some exercise and an introduction to one of the most unique outdoor spaces found anywhere.

If you cannot supply a bike or helmet for your child, please let Tim Post or Lynn Hildenbrand at the DCR know as soon as possible and we'll see if we can arrange something. Please preregister with Lynn Hildenbrand via email or at 781-662-5214.
