Rock Meadow
Rock Meadow is a Conservation area owned by the Town of Belmont and managed by the Belmont Conservation Commission. This parcel of land is seventy one acres and incorporates open meadows, forest and wetland. This parcel of land is also home to the the Victory Gardens which are a public garden. This area is sandwiched between the McLean Open Space and Beaver Brook North and is an important wildlife habitat and bird nesting area. The trails in this area are mostly of interest to local riders. They are neither technical nor do they provide enough milage to serve as a destination for mountain bikers from other areas. They do however support a fair amount of local riders who use them on evenings and weekends to avoid traveling to other destinations. There is a parking lot on Mill Street which serves this property and the adjacent parcels.
A lot of work has been happening on this property recently. The Conservation Commission acquired a grant from the US Department of Agricutlture Natural Resource Conservation Service (USDA/NRCS) to revitalize and maintain the meadows. As a result, the meadows have been cleared of invasive plants and the edges have been cleared back to historical boundry. An additional grant was acquired from the Recreational Trails Program (RTP) to rehabilitate the trails on the property. The most obvious changes are the creation of a boardwalk in the meadow and the rebuilding of a bridge over the Beaver Brook connecting Rock Meadow to Beaver Brook North. Members of NEMBA were led these work days and Greater Boston NEMBA provided the tools. On going maintenance is planned for this property and will be coordinated by the Friends of Rock Meadow. The dates of these work days are published on the Greater Boston NEMBA calendar. For more information on how to help contact Tom Grimble.
